Wrinkles: Understanding the Different Types
Facial wrinkles are a natural part of ageing, but they do not all form in the same way. Understanding the different types of wrinkles helps to identify the most effective treatment approach for each concern.
There are generally three main categories of wrinkles and lines:
Dynamic Expression Lines
These are caused by repeated facial movement such as talking, smiling, laughing, and frowning. Over time, these expression lines become more permanent and develop into static wrinkles.
Common areas include the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and between the eyebrows.
Static Wrinkles
Static wrinkles are visible even when the face is at rest. They often develop as dynamic lines deepen over time due to a natural reduction in collagen, elastin, and skin hydration.
These lines become more pronounced as skin loses its ability to bounce back.
Structural Wrinkles and Folds
These are deeper lines caused by a loss of volume and support within the skin. As we age, fat pads in the face reduce and shift, and skin elasticity decreases.
This leads to more pronounced folds such as:
Nasolabial folds (around the mouth)
Marionette lines (from mouth to chin)
Lip thinning and loss of definition
The underlying support structure of the skin weakens over time, which contributes to sagging and loss of facial fullness.
A Multi-Layered Approach to Treatment
Because wrinkles form in different ways and at different depths, effective treatment often requires a combination approach. This may include technologies that target:
Muscle activity
Collagen stimulation
Skin resurfacing
Hydration and regeneration
Treating wrinkles is not about a single solution, but about supporting the skin at every level to restore smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin.
