Pedicures are more and more popular and I am not surprised. Firstly the popularity of open toed shoes for both men and women has increased awareness of the state of one’s feet and so demand and secondly once experienced repeat business is inevitable. The delight of a foot soak, scrub and massage surpasses all! Toe nails that are correctly cut and filed will not become ingrown which can be a painful condition causing inflammation whist the application of fungicidal sprays and drops will ward off nail thickening or crumbling .

If your foot care regime has been so neglectful as to allow calluses to take hold I have this summer discovered an amazing Callus Peel that gets results in just 15 minutes. This 4 step system includes a skin softening patch which is wrapped around the area needing treatment for 10 minutes before a molded plastic scraper removes, like orange peel, the softened skin without pain or effort. All that remains to be done is to buff away the remaining traces of the callus and massage in cream. Simple!

Sun exposure can cause skin damage and ageing.

Most of us have become used to using sun creams or screens but many are messy to apply, irritating to the skin and are not providing the necessary protection. We must read the small print on each product. What does high protection mean? Individual brands set their own Sun Protection Factor scale in the absence of a national standard so question what ‘high’ protection actually means. SPF only measures U.V.B. rays. SPF is measured at 2.mg of product over a square centimeter( cm/2). If the sunbather only applies 0.5mg of suncream the levelof protection plummets.When clients come into Daydreams with dense brown markings on their face after a holiday but insist they wore sunblock 50 at all times I KNOW it has been not been a block or insufficent was applied or it was not applied frequently enough.The sun has got through. Even the best sunblock is not going to acheive full protection. This is why a peaked cap or hat can offer shade for the face. Areas of the face that are frequently presented with hyper pigmentation are the upper lip and  the cheek bone. The lip can loose protection (if it has been applied to the area under the nose) by perspiring or wiping the mouth after eating or drinking. Hair that has been waxed or bleached on the uppper lip will have left the underlying skin vulnerable to sun damage. Sun glasses shift sun block aound the eyes and their reflective nature  bounces the sun ray’s on to the prominent area of the cheek bones.   

Ultra Violet Radiation is complex.

U.V.C. rays are blocked by the ozone layer.

U.V.B rays are burning rays and hit the skin surface. Many sun creams are designed to do no more than stop sun burn.

U.V.A. rays are many times more powerful than U.V.B.  They can penetrate cloud, glass and clothing and penetrate deep into the skin. They are a primary cause of photo ageing and cause damage to underlying tissue. You may need to protect yourself if working by the window or in the car.

When choosing an effective sunblock select broad spectrum coverage to address both U.V.A and U.V.B. rays. Remember the average sunbather does not apply sufficient protection. Sun screens must provide a physical barrier to the sun’s rays. Zinc and titanium oxide are two non- irritating and active ingredients in sun protectors and ideal for all skin types.  SKINCEUTICALS (stocked at Daydreams) produce a range of award winning broad spectrum sun-blocks that are cosmetically pleasing to all skin types and contain high concentrations of transparent zinc oxide.  Most sunscreens cannot completely protect you from U.V.A. rays but broad spectrum blocks with a  SPF factor of 30/35 give a very high level of protection. Remember you are at risk by the window and in the car. Photo-ageing is when environmental factors, especislly ultra violet rays, attack the structure of the skin causing lines and wrinkles to appear.

I am frequently asked to give my opinion on various skin care ranges. Of course I do not know all ranges intimately but my training gave me some knowledge of cosmetic chemistry. I sincerely believe it is a better use of precious financial resources to purchase a quality    product which has a high level of active ingredient and use it prudently rather than  feeling you can be generous with a cream that has only a trace of the ingredient and so will ineffective however much  you use. For a product to be really make a difference active ingredients should represent 10% or more of the whole. 

Advertising within the cosmetic retail world is clever and often misleading. Much is implied and it is what is not said that is usually nearer the truth. There are fashionable phrases each year. “Visibly smoother” was very popular. It really is not difficult to smooth a rough skin with a cream or oil but what we really want is for the skin to be retaining and attracting moisture for true hydration which will ensure it’s youthful look.

Invest Wisely.

Purchasing product blended especially for you is always going to achieve better results than an over the counter product where one size must fit all. I have always emphasized to clients that professional ranges have far more active ingredient than high street ranges. When introducing  a new product to your skin my advice is to do so progressively incase of adverse reactions.  Similarly when you first begin to use a night cream you can begin with using it two or three times a week and progress over time to nightly use. These measures help the budget and recognise the strength and effectiveness of modern preparations. The world of research into skin cancers has made available so much information about skin cells and how they renew and react that  modern preparations are highly effective deep in the skin and are not just smoothing over the cracks!  Thankfully today few question the skin’s ability to absorb and use key ingredients with HRT, pain relief and nicotine patches proving how clever this largest organ in the body is. I thought you might like to look at these clips about Jet M which is beginning to be talked about in the press. Dr. Gold is a very well known dermatologist in the USA and I have attended a seminar of his at the Los Angelos Medical Aesthetic Conferance. His endorsement of Jet M impressed me.

Here we are in 2010. Time certainly does not stand still and nor does the ageing process but one of the most popular and effective ways to hold it back is the Suzuki Sequencing ‘non-surgical face lift’.

What does it do?

BRAZILIAN. Our new wax will enhance this very popular bikini wax. Hair is removed to within a one-inch wide strip of the pubic mound. EXTREME care must be taken post treatment to avoid in-growing hairs and infection. Do not exfoliate aggressively as this removes the skins natural defenses. Sooth and moisturize to avoid in-growing hairs.

PLAYBOY.  Similar to the Brazilian but a pencil thin line of hair is left on the pubic mound and hair is also removed from the anal area.

Hair removal is a very delicate beauty treatment but performed efficiently and hygienically it can deliver good long lasting results. After depilatory waxing the follicles are vulnerable and prone to infection. My advice to clients is not to touch the area, to wear loose clothing and avoid baths or showers that are very hot. Jeans are not the best attire after body treatment. Go home and put on something clean and loose. In-growing hairs are an unsightly and uncomfortable condition that I see many new clients suffering with. Generally these clients say they have been advised to exfoliate. Whilst I may agree that trapped hairs need to be released I also think that exfoliation is often too aggressive and causes much of the irritation, pustules and scarring all too frequently seen in the bikini area alongside trapped hairs. Harsh, aggressive exfoliation damages the epidermal layer of the skin rather than refining it. It strips the skin of its natural defenses which is why inflammation and infection take hold. Skin needs to be kept subtle so that hair can escape and not become trapped. After care products greatly enhance the wax experience when used for a period of time after treatment.

Permanent Hair Removal.

Epil 2000 is a painless, progressive treatment for hair removal which has been proven over a number of years at Daydreams. A bio active gel and a high frequency current combine to obtain a most comfortable and effective treatment for progressive hair removal. The high frequency current carries the active product to the hair follicle. allowing active atrophy of the germative cells. This is a safe, comfortable system, which has been proven over a number of years at Daydreams. It is an affordable treatment and carries no risks so it is suitable for facial hair.  For effective treatment the hair does need to be dark and the hair needs to be evident on the skin. After the treatment the area is cleared by waxing so you leave the salon with even large areas clear.
